Vladimir Putin is dictating on-the-ground troop movements in Ukraine as his army falters, according to Western military sources.
General Valery Gerasimov is also said to be making similar tactical decisions, micro-managing the war in minute detail which would normally be overseen by a colonel.
'We think Putin and Gerasimov are involved in tactical decision-making at a level we would normally expect to be taken by a colonel or a brigadier', said a Western military source, according to The Guardian.
The same source said that Russian battalion tactical groups (BTGs) had been 'battered', adding: 'If Putin is doing the job of a brigade commander' then 'he could be delving into a force that could be as small as 700 to 1,000 soldiers'.
Putin's soldiers have so far failed to achieve their military objectives in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have been attempting to mount a breakthrough in order to encircle Ukrainian troops in the Donbas region.
Officials believe Putin's decision to take personal control of on-the-ground troop movements could be contributing to the military failures.
Radio jamming has forced Moscow to send more battalion leaders to the front line in order to communicate with their troops, only for Ukrainians to take advantage by killing Russia's generals - with 12 confirmed dead.
The news comes after Ukrainian soldiers became the country's first to reach the Russian border after retaking Kharkiv from occupation.
Ukraine’s ministry of defence said on social media that the 227th Battalion of the 127th Brigade of its military had reached the border with Russia, marking the closest Ukrainian soldier's have come to their neighbour since it was invaded on February 24.

Um, one of Putin’s own officials is claiming the “special operation” is a disaster. Is he lying?

Based on what I’m reading and seeing, he’s likely thinking like most of the Russian leadership, which prefers to simply level Ukraine and get it over with.
They can’t level Ukraine. They don’t have enough men or munitions. Ukraine’s penetration northeast of Kharkiv has put the rail line at Vovchansk in range of traditional artillery, let alone the stuff we’ve sent. This will put tremendous pressure on Russian ability to get men & supplies to the Donbas, especially at Izyum.
Last week at Siversky Donets enough equipment to staff an entire BTG was wiped out. You don’t try to transfer that much stuff unless there’s a major strategic imperative at play. Meaning RU lost an entire axis of advance.
RU offensive operations have just about ground to a halt. Not quite; almost. Time favors Ukraine.

Yes, "simply levelling Ukraine" would be the most-efficient method of attaining the goals which Putin enunciated at the outset of this "Special Military Operation," right? Then why aren't they doing that???
Oh, because Putin is a humanitarian, right?
Ri-ight?
SERIOUSLY: Let's not engage in rhetorical back-flips to portray the military situation here as somehow better for the Russians than it actually is.
The Ukraine Campaign has indeed been, thus far, an unmitigated DISASTER for the Russians. They have humiliated themselves on the world stage, provoked their adversaries, strengthened the opposing military alliance, ruined their domestic economy, embarrassed themselves in the eyes of their nominal "friends," lost an unprecedented amount of men and materiel, and are currently still bogged down with no easily apparent means of extricating themselves.
Regards,
Hitler was trying to run WW2 from his bunker in 1945. we know how that worked out. He also ordered one of his best soldiers, Rommel, to kill himself. For failure or disagreement?? I wonder how many parallels we will see before this is over?
From what I hear, Putin is a moderate in Russian politics. So, there probably are people who want to take the gloves off.
