Pakistan facing bankruptcy as the economy crumbles
Asia Times ^

PESHAWAR – Taking its cue from Sri Lanka, Pakistan is heading toward bankruptcy amid a highly charged political atmosphere marked by threats of a march on the capital Islamabad by the ousted prime minister, who is demanding fresh elections in the country by May 20.

The political instability, analysts fear, may turn violent in the coming days, affecting Pakistan’s reeling economy, which has been headed toward default-like situation.

The country’s foreign exchange reserves are falling, food inflation is spiraling and the Pakistani rupee is on slippery ground, showing massive 21.72% drop during the current financial year.

Economic experts and analysts have been demanding a financial emergency to deal with looming economic challenges. They suggest that Rs.800 billion (US$4.1 billion) tax exemptions available to the corporate sector be withdrawn and higher taxes be levied on land and property holdings.

They also want cuts to non-combat defense spending, a special emergency tax on vehicles 1600cc or more, doubling the electricity tariff on residential properties 800 square yards or more, downsizing federal government departments.

...

Former prime minister Imran Khan, who was removed from office after no-confidence motion against him last month, has been pulling massive crowds in back-to-back public meetings, instigating the masses to rise up against “the US hegemony and its collusive role” in changing his democratic regime through what he says were undemocratic and unconstitutional means.

Khan came to power in 2018 in highly controversial elections, which critics claim were rigged, monitored and manipulated by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Khan claims the powerful army with whom he had excellent rapport during his tenure did not back him in frustrating the designs of foreign and local conspirators. “I told the military leadership and also sent my finance minister to brief them that if the plan succeeded, the economy would crumble.”

I doubt that international lenders make loans that can be repaid in Pakistani rupees.

Pakistan needs $15 billion to stabilize the forex reserves position and strengthen the rupee. The SBP Foreign Exchange reserves are negative, excluding loans from the friends. There is no way Pakistan can do without an immediate bailout by the IMF. There should be no doubt about it,” he tweeted.

I guess they could threaten to sell a few of their nuclear weapons.

(s/)

That would likely get them the money. Don't much like the idea of a muzzie country with nukes and a need for lots of money.

A failed nuclear state would be a new phenomenon.

Pakistan has been a failed nuclear state for decades, and the result has been a nuclear-armed North Korea and an Iran which is on the brink of nuclear capability.

Some people fail to see what is happening, they only will see it when it is too late.

I guess people on this site will think it is a okay when the Nuland group oust Jair Bolsonero the conservative leader of Brazil. Nuland has been down there stirring up the next domino to fall into the NWO/WEF.

They will ignore the connection to the leftist neocon cabal they are supporting running Ukraine.

Probably too late to stop all this anyway. meh
