“Lincoln arrested and deported his opponent.”

Stephen Douglas died of natural causes in 1861 and his personal relationship with Lincoln was warm and cordial to the very end. Douglas may have been a Democrat but he was also an ardent supporter of the Union, he opposed secession, and would have never been arrested for sedition let alone deported to the CSA.

Anti-war Democrat Representative Clement Vallandigham of Ohio was the one expelled beyond Confederate lines in 1863 for giving an anti-war speech.

I’m sure many others were as well. Stephen Douglas, however, was not.
