The so-called reporter's privilege, to the extent it is occasionally observed, is illegitimate judge-made law, intended to protect what is now referred to as the deep state.

There is no legitimate reason why some ignorant nihilist moron, just because he gets hired by the NYT, should get a special privilege to withhold testimony in a criminal -- or even a civil -- trial.

Especially in this age of Twitter, blogging, and on-line videos, everyman is a reporter. Giving NYT and WaPo propagandists special privileges is evidence of rot in the judicial system.
