The Kentucky couple who came under fire for allowing their 6-year-old son to run in the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati have revealed that they were visited by Child Protective Services.

Ben and Kami Crawford, of Bellevue, shared a photo on Instagram of an official interviewing Rainier, “who adamantly decided that he wanted to run a marathon.”

In the caption, they wrote that Child Protective Services arrived at their home unannounced on Friday “and interviewed our children because leaders in the community are calling running with children wrong.”

When I was a kid I waled to and from school, barefoot, in the snow, uphill both ways. Things were tough in those days.

When I was sixish I used to run all the way across town to get to the library. But that was just a mile. 25 miles at the time might have been pushing it. But a little later I was doing the 25 carrying a rifle. Never was bothered by busybodies.

my beef is, in my house anyhow, 6 year olds don’t set the agenda.
I don’t care if the kid runs 2 marathons back to back- it was the wording of the statement from the parent.
“ He adamantly wanted to run a marathon “ he’s not in charge! JMHO.

do child services visit if your kid sits on the coach playing video games, eating chips and ice cream and is 100lbs overweight and pre-diabetic? My guess is no.

And that is exactly how you handle it! Agents of the state have jumped the shark and no longer have my consent. When they visit parents for not using the “correct” pronouns but won’t pay a visit to teachers for having a “transition closet”, I refuse to speak to them or allow them in my house. Talk to my attorney bud and in the meantime, get off my lawn!

We did this too! Mom dropped us off at Phoenix college in the morning and we meandered around town for hours, unaccompanied by adults, having a ball.
Not sure what the charity was but we had to get our books stamped to prove the miles walked. Good times.

Apples and oranges. There are licensing requirements to drive a bus. I’m sorry you are so marshmallowy that you can’t see the difference.

Every year when I was a kid we used to do a 20 mile walk around our city without **gasp** our parents. We hit up the neighbors and family to sponsor us for like $.25 a mile, $.50 a mile etc. It was an amazing freaking time! All of my friends did it and we met new friends on the way while raising money for charity. Started doing that when I was about seven. I understand times have changed and I’d be with my kid on a walk like that today.

However, this sounds like a family activity. A wholesome, beneficial activity that is nobody’s business except the family. And it appears it wasn’t their first rodeo

“what if he decides he wants to drive a schoolbus??”

There are age restrictions for a drivers license, which would be needed to drive a school bus. You understand that, right? Right?

Six year old is what, first grade?

I don’t remember that time too well, but I know down to fourth or third grade at least, we definitely had mile-run day once or twice a year in school!

This is a great news story! Clearly, EVERY CHILD in Kentucky is living in a safe, clean home with lots of food, clothing, heat and loving parents who don’t beat or molest them!! Thus, Kentucky CPS has the time and resources to harass a family that engages in a healthy outdoor athletic event.../s

I thought 6 year olds are allowed to make life-changing decisions for themselves.
