The Legitimacy of Russia's Actions in Ukraine
London School of Economics and Political Science ^ | 03/04/2015 | Dr Björn Alexander Düben

Spurious though Moscow’s claims for a ‘responsibility to protect’ may be, its intervention in Ukraine has ultimately been based in equal measure on Russia’s purported historical, ethnic, and cultural claims to Crimea and (less explicitly) to large stretches of south-eastern Ukraine frequently referred to as ‘Novorossiya’.

“The Hawaiians had settled and ruled Hawaii for a thousand years before America stole it literally by armed force.”

Feel free to burn yourself in protest against that great injustice.

“Solidly Russian.”

Parts of the US are solidly hispanic. Those parts are within the sovereign borders of the US and are not subject to annexation by a foreign power.

You act as if we don’t infringe other nations sovereignty all the time. Somehow you think you have the high ground because you have a “I stand with Ukraine” shirt on. Now you are supporting us doing it again and getting into another nation’s war. Your thought process is all f*ed-up.

“I await your declaration of total support for giving Hawaii back to the Hawaiians.”

When the Hawaiians vote to leave we can discuss it. But we pretty much settled that hash in 1865. Unless of course you think we should let The Confederacy reform and petition for independence. Any thoughts on that?

“Otherwise, your crocodile tears about the ever-shifting borders of “THE” Ukraine (a region of Russia, never a country before 1991) are just a joke.”

They’re a country now. Seat at the UN and everything.

“Oh good... one-sided blog-trash posing as objective analysis.”

Yeah, here we go again. It’s as if nothing happened that drove Putin to take that step, something he (and other) Russian leaders had AVOIDED for 32 years. Putin just wakes up on Feb 24 and decides to invade a country...
Yep.

“Whataboutism“ The childish concept that when criticizing a nation, its somehow unfair to be reminded that you do precisely the same thing and are doing so right at this moment.

1850: President Millard Fillmore

1750: King George 2 of England

Now, tell me who was the President or King of “THE” Ukraine then.

There were none, THE Ukraine was a region, not a nation, before 1991.

Hawaii was more of a sovereign nation than THE Ukraine every was, until we “annexed” (stole) it at gunpoint in 1898.

Do you support giving Hawaii back to the Hawaiians? If not, why not?

Relations between NATO and Ukraine date back to the early 1990s according to Nato...

Dialogue and cooperation started when Ukraine joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council (1991) and the Partnership for Peace programme (1994).
.....Relations were strengthened with the signing of the 1997 Charter on a Distinctive Partnership, which established the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC) to take cooperation forward.

Since 2009, the NUC has overseen Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration process, including reforms under the Annual National Programme (ANP).
Cooperation has deepened over time and is mutually beneficial, with Ukraine actively contributing to NATO-led operations and missions.

“When the Hawaiians vote to leave we can discuss it.”

Nice dodge. So, we should wait 120 years AFTER the Russians take whatever they take from THE Ukraine, to have a vote if they are happy about what happened in 2022?

Just say it out loud, you support America when we invade nations.

Russia has 100X more claim on “The Ukraine,” especially in the Southeast (Crimea and Donbass), than we EVER had on Hawaii.

Hawaii, we just plain stole at gunpoint, and you support it.

Just admit it. Invasion are great when we do them.

You won’t get any serious answers to that. Only ad hominem attacks will follow. (Some hypocrisy as well)

None of your/Putin business if Ukrainians want to pack their country with military equipment.
None of your/Putin business if Ukrainians want to dance naked on the tables every other Wednesday - it’s their business.
None of your/Putin business if they want to run military drills every day, no one demands from Russia not to run military drills in the Kurils, a few kilometers from Japan any time they want, which they do.
No one threatens Russia’s security and territorial integrity in any sense, shape or form.

If you want to answer the original question, then you can start fruitfully comparing it to all the US misdeeds.

Yes like we did in Syria to break off a large chunk and give it to an ethnic breakaway group. We are doing today, this afternoon, what Russia is doing in Donbass. We bombed Serbia for two months to break away Kosovo.

So you want to put the wishes of ancestors above living citizens?

Are invasions “great” when Russia does them?

February 2022. Let’s not be hypocritical, sovereign states are invaded every year for various reasons, sometimes the narrative says it’s justified, other times the narrative calls for retribution against the invaders. You can pick your side but don’t pretend to hold the moral high ground. National sovereignty is demonstrably not an absolute. The real question is: is the conflict in Ukraine worth the cost in American blood and treasure that we will incur if we choose further involvement? For me, the answer is no.

It was mainly due to the huge natural gas and oil reserves discovered in Donbas and to the west.
Ukraine was going to develop them and sell to Europe.
This would have started a price war and would have devastated the Russian economy.
NATO already told Ukraine they wouldn’t be admitted, but Xiden, supposedly, told Zelensky the keep up the appearance that Ukraine would join.
Why?

I'm not leading the charge for Free Hawaii.

And I'm not, unlike you, rushing into Nuclear WW3 over the ever-shifting borders of THE Ukraine (a region, never a nation, before 1991.)

I'm just sick of the sanctimony over Poor Ukraine's Sacred Borders. It's a cynical joke, or a confession of ignorance by "hatchlings" whose historical literacy began last year.

Do you support us getting into another nation’s war? Will you pick-up a gun and fight, or just expect someone’s else’s kid to do it?
