Read or heard an interview with Turcotte some years ago.
As Secretariat entered the final Belmont home stretch, Turcotte said he looked back to see how close the other horses were and was surprised not to see any, They were all still too far back around the final curve to be in view. I think either in the old films or maybe the movie you can see him glance back.
In the standard footage, Turcotte’s head is too small/fuzzy to see but I have no doubt that is true if he said so.
