The GOP could have headed that off by joining bipartisan legislative relegalization - but instead they kowtowed to the puritanical nitwits in their ranks.
Now I’ve learned that my use of “Marijuana” is racist! (Against Mexicans).
Use of “puritanical” suggests the following quote:

“Puritanical” could describe those in uniform who tried to enforce early drug laws, but were repressed by judges and their lawyer-friends.
