University of California Departments Consider Ditching Letter-Grade System for New Students
KQED ^ | April 26, 2022 | Michael Burke

Inside some University of California academic departments and colleges, an atypical idea is gaining steam: deemphasizing, or even ditching, the A-F grading system and rethinking how to assess student learning.

Divisions like UC Berkeley’s College of Chemistry and UC Davis’s Department of Mathematics are deliberating whether to change how they grade students. In some cases, that means awarding students a pass or no-pass grade rather than a letter grade. Other times, it may mean allowing students to choose which assignments get the most weight in determining their grade.

At UC Irvine, Academic Senate leaders are currently evaluating long-term options around grading and have met with officials at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where students don’t receive letter grades for their first semester, to learn about that university’s approach.

Departments at other UC campuses also are experimenting with making changes to how they test students, putting less emphasis on high-stakes exams, because some students aren’t good test-takers but can demonstrate their understanding of the material in other ways. Some departments have begun using two-stage exams: Students take a standard individual exam before also taking a group test where they work with other students.

The changes are especially being considered for first-year students to give them more time to get used to the rigors of college work and learn the material over the course of a semester rather than discourage them early on with low scores on tests and other assignments.

All the possibilities are a welcome development to Jody Greene, the associate vice provost of teaching and learning at UC Santa Cruz, who argues that letter grades aren’t necessarily indicative of whether a student has mastered the material.

In just one more generation, the USA won’t be graduating ANY competent engineers and scientists.

The USA has already fallen from #1 to #38 globally in K-12 math education.

This UC proposal is the direct result of 1) the USA graduating kids from high school who have zero ability in math and sciences and 2) building self-esteem in stupid youth with no aptitude for math and science.

My sister has been teaching secondary school math for 45 years and says the “You, too can go to college and become an engineer, even with your 0.5 GPA.” indoctrination of minorities is rampant.

The left’s response to continuing worsening of math and science education is to dumb it down even further. We are in a vicious downward spiral with no bottom in sight.

“Idiocracy” didn’t take 500 years to arrive. The James Webb Telescope and SpaceX may be the end of the road.

College tuition should be drastically cut to reflect the drastic decline in the value of a college degree.

They need to just move to the end game.

I attended the U.C. system in the 60s. Professors were not shy about giving Ds and Fs. An F for a male student might well mean leaving school and getting the chance to discover far-away places, since Selective Service expected you to earn 30 hours of credit per year to graduate in the allotted 4 years.

I had several classes where 100% of your grade was based on your final exam. One diabolical professor even told us the question that was asked on the final. Actually he told us 10 questions that might be asked, on finals day he’d draw one question out of the hat and we had three hours to compose and write our response in the blue book.

Did all of this put us under pressure? Of course. Was it too much for some? Yep. But most of us managed to pass. One aspect of aging that I’ve noticed is that almost everything appears to be sliding downhill. The once mighty University of California appears to be joining the rush towards mediocracy or maybe even idiocracy.

There’s gold in them there hills... well, there’s money in them there students. Colleges are already letting in kids who need ‘remedial’ help. Yep, not being able to read should not stop a University from getting more gov. loan money... I mean more deserving ‘students’...

A bridge doesn’t give a crap about your feelings or playing games with grading. It works because the engineer understands the physics or it fails because they don’t.

Re: must have a certificate from ASQC. ASQC tests and certifies that you know the material.

Why won't ASQC also conform to the equity directive and adjust accordingly? What makes them immune to DEI?

Wait until those kinds of standards reach the judicial system. Then it matters WHO you are as to whether you can be found guilty of drug use, child molestation, murder of one, or perhaps even thousands (or millions) as long as you don't kill the judge or the jurors. The way it is going, only the guiltless will be able to found guilty, and the guilty should all be able to walk.

Equipment, vehicles, machinery, etc. won't work because no standards will be set. Fix it yourself and make it work. It could be so bad that once we reach a stone-age level of function, rocks used to pound grain, etc. will be recalled due to defects.

University of California takes your money and you get nothing in return and you will be happy....

Potential employer: I see you went to the University of California, what were your grades?

Out of luck job seeker: I do not know, they won’t tell me.

U.C. Santa Cruz tried this in the 70s-80s. Basically it was a failure. Grad schools, Med Schools, and employers did not have the time or interest in reading fifty evaluations to try and determine a virtual GPA. Thus the U.C.
Santa Cruz students did not really get the benefit of a University of California education.
