“What do you do during blackouts?”

Power your home essentials from your car battery.

“They are fun to drive, and accelerate faster than gas cars. That’s not a reason to buy one”

The reasons I bought my car:

1. Fun to drive

2. Accelerates faster than most gas cars

3. Looks great

You may be right. It probably depends on how many people adopt solar on their own (vs the utility using solar and people still buying power from the utility regardless of the source).

When I am in my EV, there are certain people that get really aggressive in their tailgating and give me dirty looks in parking lots etc. - they seem to assume I am some environmental leftist. I recently put an NRA sticker on mine and it actually helped. I have never had those problems in my ICE vehicles.

For whatever reason there are people that rabidly hate EV’s.

It’s not the case in O.C., but there are so many Teslas here that it’s probably the most commonly seen car on the streets. At any four-way stoplight, it’s typical to count half a dozen.

I should clarify that the “not the case” comment referred to nasty looks. There are so many EVs here that it’s ridiculous.

What does it cost per (whatever it’s called) to charge a vehicle? I got to see what an electric car dash looks like. No getting one tho. Still driving a 94 Ford 4 door wagon. Love it!

I am in a very red county in Florida and Teslas are fairly common. Nobody pays any attention to them here.

“What does it cost per (whatever it’s called) to charge a vehicle? “

Hundreds of sites dealing with that.

The answer is “Depends”

Assume battery is 75 kwhr.

Electricity cost is $0.12 per kwhr.

Cost is $9.00

The Tesla gets about 4 miles per kwhr.

I read an analysis in a trade publication that indicated US electric demand will grow at 3 to 4 per cent per year, largely due to the adoption of electric vehicles, and utilities need to be planning how to do this.

Let’s take a little road trip. A real
life adventure of ICE vs EV.
October 2020.
Starting out in a small town about 50
miles west of Houston.
My traveling companion in his EV (don’t
know or care who built it), and me, in
a 2014 Mustang GT. He powered up at his
home (50 miles east of my house). He’s
already 50 in the hole.
We start out on a cool Friday afternoon
averaging about 80 mph. First stop for
fuel and charge, the New Brunfels exit for
a shortcut above the redicously designed
I-10 route thru San Antiono. It took me
15 minutes to fuel up w/a bathroom break.
I was ready to continue, but my friend is
still plugged in. Since he knew the location
of our final destination, I told him I’d
see him in Albuquerque.
After San Antonio on I-10 places to fuel
up are sparse. Kerrville, Ozona,
Ft Stockton. (The latter my last stop
before heading north on 285). Who knows
if these places have charging stations yet?
After 13 hours of spirited driving, I
arrive at the balloon pilots’ house just
in time to pack up and head to the AIBF.
We head to our assigned lift-off space,
the crew inflates the balloon, then me and
the pilot take off for the wild blue yonder.
My friend, with his EV? He made it in time
for the landing. His trip was almost four
hours longer in time than mine.
EV’s might do just fine in the crowded
confines of a large city, but there’s
still miles, and miles of open road
where plug-ins are non existant.

Recent road trip from Sacramento to La Quinta, and then back again. Witnessed a new Audi electric SUV trying to charge. The driver used his phone app along with the charging station. After 15 minutes he got back into the Audi, used the App some more, and then plugged it back in to charge some more. During this whole time we completely filled up our SUV with gas, and did some shopping. As we left they were still charging the Audi.

I learned many moons ago that if they were trying to ‘fast’ charge the car, it cuts into the total, overall life of the battery.

+ .30 cents a kw in places in California. Only to go up and up. You have to charge everyday you use the electric vehicle and spend hours doing so plus worry about fires in the home garage or while driving and spending more money on electricity then gas.
No resale value either as the battery is very expensive to replace.

I do electrical distribution design for the utility companies.
We’re massively understaffed, there’s a ton of work, and our workforce is old.
I know guys in their late 60’s and early 70’s that are still doing contract work.
Companies are just throwing cash at them so they still do some work.

One, people don’t like change. That’s largely human nature.
Two, I think many people think they will eventually be forced to get one. Just another freedom lost.
Three, most don’t understand the technology involved.

For some it’s not realistic. I live in the Northeast in an apartment. Where do I charge? Do I sit in the snow in a line for hours while I’m late to work?
In the Pocono areas it’s mountainous and many have trucks and haul lumber.
It’s also a potential distribution issue. I do electrical distribution design for the utility companies. There’s just many issues involved.
That said, I think they’re cool being a EE, but not realistic for many.
