It would be an extreme stroke of good luck - but it is very, very unlikely - that stronger measures will result in anything resembling the Old Republic.
With luck - Sulla, or Pinochet. The odds favor - Pol Pot or Hitler.
Consider the measures it took to establish the Republic in the first place.
