Satellite Image Pinpoints Russian Cruiser Moskva As She Burned
Naval News ^ | April 16, 2022 | H I Sutton

Analysis of radar satellite imagery has revealed the location of the Moskva soon after she was reportedly hit by 2 missiles. The Russian Navy cruiser was the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet and is a symbolic as well as naval loss for Russia.

The Russian cruiser Moskva will go down in history. The sinking will be studied and written about, both as a single event and, likely, a key moment in the War.

The fog of war is still obscuring the event, and information operations are clouding it further. But we can look again at the open source intelligence (OSINT) picture. In particular, the ship’s movements and where she was when it happened.

Analysis of radar satellite imagery of the northern Black Sea on April 13, appears to pinpoint the stricken ship. Other vessels are seen in attendance. The location of the event can now, for the first time, be given coordinates.

A ship matching Moskva’s size and situation is seen at 45°10’43.39″N, 30°55’30.54″E. This position is east of Snake Island, 80 nautical miles from Odesa and 50 nautical miles from the Ukrainian coast. The satellite passed at 6.52pm local time. Based on analysis by multiple people, we are confident that this shows Moskva’s final hours.

The Neptune missile is a USSR reversed engineered copy of the American Harpoon system that Uke acquired during the cold war and has kept the platform for itself after the break up with modernizations. The USA still uses a modernized Harpoon system as well and has not moved to supersonic sea skimming missiles for its ASW system this sinking shows exactly why the USA has not needed to. A small highly subsonic missile at a few feet off the water with a frequency agile seeker head and a tiny front on radar profile is nearly impossible to intercept before it punches a hole in your waterline this was true in the 1980s and as Russia just Fd around and found out true in 2022. This should be viewed as an operational example of a harpoon class missle vs the exact target it was designed to sink in the cold war. The last thing you want to hear in CIC is VAMPIRE VAMPIRE VAMPIRE you have 35 seconds or less to get your CIWS firing or you are dead.

Analysis of radar satellite imagery

And that's not a radar satellite image, if anything it's an infrared image.

The U.S. Department of Defense certainly knows from where the missile was fired that destroyed the train station at Kramatorsk and killed more than 50 civilians. It is obvious the U.S. government does not want the world to know, by confirmation, the missile was fired by Ukraine as a false flag attack on its own people to then publicly use to blame the Russians for committing a “war crime.”

It is obvious reports of “atrocities” in Ukraine are not being presented with specific evidence of the source. Dead bodies of civilians shown on the news are not evidence of WHO is responsible for killing them.

If Russia is to blame, the U.S. has recorded military satellite surveillance of the events and there would be no plausible reason to withhold the proof unless it does prove Ukraine fired the missile. The “wrong” side would be blamed.

As an ex Navy man in a navy that operates the Harpoon, it is in desperate need of replacing due to its slow speed and now relatively short range.

As as stop-gap measure, Australia is replacing Harpoons with NSM. NSM is still subsonic but has better than twice the range of Harpoon.

What the West needs are long range (400nm+) supersonic (mach 3+) or hypersonic (mach 7+) anti-ship missiles. I don’t see any getting fielded before the end of the decade at best.

Thanks for posting, Gnome.

It takes courage to challenge the anti-Russia narrative here on Free Republic.

I have been looking for an official Ukraine government log of the names, date of birth, and location for all Ukraine civilian deaths, but I cannot find one.

I am deeply skeptical when the USA military and the pro-Biden MSM start cheer leading the Russia Killing Civilians meme.

I heard that the Neptune has greater range than the Soviet copy of the Harpoon. Is that correct? Is the Neptune an improvement on the Harpoon? I get it that the U.S. needs a next generation weapon beyond the Harpoon or beyond the Neptune for that matter.

Doesn’t ASW mean anti-submarine warfare?

Harpoon and similar systems are SSMs designed to attack surface ships.

Thia ia Russia’s Bismark. Now let us find out
the true casualty figures. Russia says all sailors
got saved, I cannot accept that given the internal
explosions the missiles set off.

Other sources say the crew including its Captain
went down with the ship, that would be almost
600 sailors.

I would like to know. This is a big story.

Uh, you think spy satellites don't have IR cameras?

I know for a fact they do but that picture isn't from a radar satellite, that was my only point.

“I know for a fact they do but that picture isn’t from a radar satellite, that was my only point.”

And you know this how? The article specifically says the image was acquired using radar wavelengths (synthetic aperture radar).

I agree. The one thing conspicuous in it’s absence to me is the calls of peace by the administration, the MSN, and all the other “usual suspects”. Instead we get crickets on that subject and calls for more arms. Something stinks about this whole thing.

Something stinks about this whole thing.

You're right, and here it is: when one country invades another country, violating its sovereign borders and kills its people, you're the bad guy.

That's what stinks.

You know what else stinks? That there are people here on FR who don't seem to get that.

And here's what else stinks too: There are NO good guys in this. None. Biden's corrupt AF. Putin's an evil SOB and Xi is waiting and watching all the mistakes getting made right now so when he crosses the straits into Taiwan, no one can do a damn' thing about it.

Our 'news media' lies like hell, full of propaganda and gas lighting everyone who's dumb enough to fall for it and here we are on the verge of WW3 and as per usual, the truth is the first casualty of war.

The fact that very few on FR actually see this and instead root for Russia in all this really makes me think this place has completely gone to hell after my near 24 year tenure here.

Have a nice day.
