They always WERE authoritarians. It was just this 99.5% survivable “pandemic” that brought it out.
The Left was ALWAYS authoritarian.
COVID enabled them to implement their agenda.
I recall visiting Haight Ashbury in the mid 1960s, before and during the Human Be-In and the Summer of Love. To my recollection, it was as apolitical as any movement could get. I dimly recall at least one essay that describes the co-opting of the Haight Ashbury hippie movement by the radical left from places such as Manhattan. By mid 1968 I sensed (full disclosure, I was no longer in California by then) that the mood of the movement had turned political and ugly in the sense of open to violence as a means to political ends. The only point I am trying to make is that the original hippies need not be condemned for the subsequent political movements that co-opted them. I think that the original hippies were (whatever else one might say about them) honest and peace loving in the truest sense of the word, and this IMHO has always seemed to me to be a positive thing.
Yup—”speak truth to power” became “shut up or you will be fired”.
