RE: Keystone XL was going to transport Tar Sands oil which is hard to refine and was not going to be sold here in any event.

So, was that the reason for stopping the pipeline?

The main reason for stopping the pipeline is that it would lower the cost of transporting the oil out of Alberta.
By lowering the cost to transport, it increases the price/barrel that they get for the oil FOB Alberta.

By increasing the return in Alberta, they will increase Tar Sands production. Increasing Tar Sands production is viewed by the Greenies/environmentalist as the worst rape of mother earth going on in the world today. Akin to beating baby seals over the head with a club or harvesting whales.

FYI, all the pipelines out of AB are full. There is only one pipeline that currently goes west to Vancouver. They are doubling the size of that. They also want to build a pipeline directly west to the BC coast. IF they build the pipeline to BC/Pacific Ocean it will make AB oil cheaper than Alaska oil delivered to the Pacific Ocean. This will benefit the western US(CA,WA,OR,ID) consumers. It will also greatly benefit CHINA, Japan, Korea.
China also has the excess capacity to refine this type of oil. IF this western Canadian pipeline gets built, China will become AB’s biggest customer.
