Mum on Ukraine’s Security Wish List, Putin Instead Sends a Warlord to Mariupol

ATHENS — The considerable fanfare surrounding a fresh round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine at Istanbul yesterday risks fizzling fast — and if you are among the thousands still trapped in the besieged Ukrainian city (at least for the moment) of Mariupol, it probably already has.

That is because the real power broker in this mess, Vladimir Putin, has shot down an incipient humanitarian aid mission to the city that forces under his command have largely destroyed.

The idea for said mission started with a Greek proposal, to which France glommed on and Turkey too, but Mr. Putin reportedly told President Macron in another of their lengthy phone chats that Ukrainian forces still fighting in Mariupol would have to surrender before humanitarian aid can be dispatched, the Greek daily Kathimerini reported this morning.

Ukrainian fighters laying down their arms is little more than a pipe dream for Mr. Putin, who for his part appears to be throwing more mettle into the fight he started, its provenance be damned.

Russian state media reported that a Chechen warlord accused of multiple human rights abuses, Ramzan Kadyrov, has traveled to Mariupol to continue the Kremlin’s brutal onslaught of the strategic port city. According to the Times of London, the 45-year-old Mr. Kadyrov is notorious for torturing his critics in the tightly controlled Muslim republic he rules in the south of Russia.

Mr. Kadyrov has been one of Mr. Putin’s principal cheerleaders for the war in Ukraine, the paper reports, has mocked Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has taunted Elon Musk on Twitter, and has a penchant for wearing pricey Prada boots. If some of that has a surreal ring to it, the hard facts are that thousands of civilians have likely been killed in Mariupol since bombing began four weeks ago,

Probably like Germans getting sent to the Russian Front - how to get rid of the ones you don’t want.

Good Russky = Dead Russky, 100, 75, 50 years ago and now, too.

Given the Russian soldier is one that survives in most aweful conditions, he can only win in that kind of “theater” of resilience that the capitalist could not accept and would surrender under.

As a result, yes, Putinists have full intension of using terrorism and reducing the world to economic rubbles as a means to prevail.

We should not deride too quickly off hand the Russian “mismanagement” in Ukraine, it is actually a method of attrition against the enemy and of selection for Russian ranks.

RE: It’s pretty clear that the land corridor from Donbas to Crimea is what Russia really wants.

Here’s how I see territorial compromise has to work out if this war is to end... I don’t see any other way out unless this becomes a long war of attrition or Putin gets impatient and uses WMDs.

Crimea is a given. Over 90% of Crimeans don’t want to be Ukranians. Let them go or let them vote for the world to see. Crimea was an artificial attachment to Ukraine made during Kruschev’s regime. The Crimeans never thought of themselves as Ukrainians.

Stop the fighting and agree to let Luhansk and Donetsk decide whether they want to be part of Ukraine or autonomous.

Zelensky can also assure Putin that he will NOT join NATO. But Putin has to give too. Ukraine reserves the right to be a sovereign state that will defend itself. Negotiations cannot be one way, it is give and take.

This is the most practical solution, which will save MOST of Ukraine, and still allow Putin a face-saving way of saying to the Russians: “Mission Accomplished”, while also allowing people in regions who don’t want to be Ukranians to decide their own fate, at the same time allow the other over 80% of Ukraine who DO NOT want to be under Russian domination the freedom to be a sovereign nation.

Yugoslavia has done this, So has Czechoslovakia, So has Sudan, and so did Canada in Quebec ( almost but not quite ).

The alternative is a continuation of the bloodbath.

Godwin’s Law still applies. Every time I hear someone invoke the word “nazi”, I know I’m being played by a propagandist.

Correct. You would think by now that “White Supremacist” Trump voters would smell out this gaslighting Ukrainian “nazi” fairy tale but apparently not. Putinists use exactly the same rhetorical tactics on their opponents that Democrats do. Birds of a feather...

People need to be reminded of the non-binding 1994 Budapest Memorandum, where Russia, America, and the U.K. pledged not to use military force against Ukraine in exchange for it renouncing the nuclear weapons it had obtained from the collapsing Soviet Unio

People know. Most just don’t care. Putinists feel the only good Ukrainian is a dead one. Now the world knows the US will not honor its agreements, can not be trusted and plan accordingly. Based on Ukraine’s experience a lot of countries are going to nuke up now. Guaranteed.

‘’It’s pretty clear that the land corridor from Donbas to Crimea is what Russia really wants’’

——-

Of course. Mariupol is also home to one of the largest steel plants in Europe and the Donbas is rich in metallurgical coal. Estimates of 60K Ukrainian troops surrounded in the East the past weeks with no supplies available. Sad this is happening, but inevitable

Your post seems to be the only outcome. It hasn’t made sense to think Putin was going to occupy territory outside these areas. Odessa will be interesting going forward.

Ukraine never "obtained" any nuclear weapons, nor did it ever control any. All Soviet nuclear weapon systems were legally transferred to Russia, the internationally recognized owner of the Soviet legacy, as part of the formal dissolution of the USSR.

Regarding the Donbas regions... the only solution is ONE MORE TRY — A referendum monitored and supervised by international observers for fairness.

The referendum question : What do you want your place to be?

A. Russian

B. Ukrainian

C. Independent

Let the people of Donbas decide what they want for themselves.

a referendum would be a good solution.
including the east of Dnipro river area, south and Odessa regions for separate referendum is good too. The western third of polish catholics (forner galicia) deserve their choice too.
All good solutions (better than bullets) but hard to implement.

If Putin loves the people of the Ukraine south and east so much why is he flattening their cities. Oh, I guess it is because he is after the petroleum and gas reserves underground so he could care less about anything living or dead above ground. In 2012 reserved were found in the south and east, and exploration contracts signed with major oil companies. Then in 2014 Putin seized Crimea and began to destablize the Donbas area. Now he just wants to destroy all Ukraine life above those deposits. Thousands are being bussed out of the area. Who knows how many really want to go to Russia, and how many are faking it to just get away from being bombed.?

Another possibility might be providing a travel corrider between Crimea and west Russia. Something like the Danzig Corridor, or the Panama Canal Zone. In addition Ukraine must have its rights to drill for oil in the Black Sea restored. The oil is why Puting really wanted Crimea.

***That’s obvious horse shiite. If it were true there never would even have been a need for the Budapest Agreement.

I don’t need to look any further than your putrid smell of troll extends. I suppose that, since your particular odor extends a rather long distance, I might look a little bit. The thing is, I can’t stand the stink.
