Ukraine warns Belarus planning 'direct invasion' to assist Putin's forces

Danielle Wallace - 17m ago

Ukrainian officials warned on Sunday that the Belarusian military was preparing to invade at the onset of the fifth week since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces first descended on Ukraine last month.

In a statement shared to Facebook, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said there were signs that suggested the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus were preparing for a "direct invasion" of Ukrainian territory.

Belarus borders Ukraine to the north and was reportedly used as a staging area for Russian forces.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense issued a stern warning for Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

"The direct involvement of Belarusian troops in the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine, contrary to the will of the military and the vast majority of the Belarusian people, will become a fatal mistake of Alexander Lukashenko," the statement said of Putin’s close ally.

Not like you don’t lie here every day, and hate America.

Just something to think about.

I have a simplistic mind, and I often misunderstand things because I don’t grok extremely complex things. I welcome correction and edification as a result.

Having said that...

My understanding is that upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine surrendered what nuclear weapons were under its control to Russia, having been given written security guarantees, essentially saying they (Ukraine) wouldn’t need them anymore; and that this is where Ukraine first entertained the idea of joining NATO — more or less.

Put in small words, they were convinced to dis-arm, and could no longer make a clear defense for themselves by themselves from large overpowering adversaries.

Give up your guns, and call 9-1-1 if you’re in trouble.

Ok. There’s a general sort of lesson in that, I think.

Change my mind.

Absolutely correct.

They gave up a huge nuclear arsenal for the sake of the world and this is their reward.

Lukashenko is just Putin’s puppet. He has no legitimacy in Belarus. Many Belorussians are now fighting against Russia in Ukraine. Conscripting Belorussians to fight in Ukraine could easily backfire on Putin. Half of Belarus was Poland before WWII, and many Belorussians may not object to changing the borders. Putin might be willing to exchange that for Eastern Ukraine. Things are getting interesting.

I wonder why the Ukrainians have not taken the fight to Russia? Done foolishly, it would make the Russian public irate; but done wisely, it would strongly increase anti-war sentiment.
