1) In 1947, the Soviet Union didn't have an Atomic Bomb. We did.

B) In 1947, the Berlin Airlift brought in food and fuel to a city that was being blockaded by the Soviets, not to an entire country.

III) In 1947, there was no active anti-aircraft missiles and Soviet fighters defending the airspace around West Berlin.

Sit down and STFU, Mr. Vice President.

The Soviets absolutely had air defenses around West Berlin. That was one of the great concerns about launching the airlift; if it would lead to conflict with Soviet aircraft.

But back then we had national and military leadership with guts and the willingness to do the right thing even if it involved taking some risks.
