His statement is being misinterpreted, and is really nothing new. Just because he correctly recognizes that NATO is not going to accept Ukraine as a member anytime in the foreseeable future, he also said this same article:

"Kyiv needs new formats of interaction with the West and separate security guarantees."

All he is saying here is that alliances don't necessarily have to be under the umbrella of the full NATO alliance specifically. Ukraine still wants to be able to pursue bilateral and multilateral alliances with Western nations outside of NATO.

This was already reported as being the Ukrainian position days ago, and the Russians already have rejected it. So to any who think this is just proof that Ukraine is willing to give on one of the reasons Russia went to war in the first place, you are mistaken.

Russia is demanding that Ukraine not enter into any self-defense alliance with any Western nation, and Ukraine has not surrendered that point.
