Kremlin says Putin ordered to refrain from storming big cities in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to refrain from storming Ukraine’s big cities for fear of great losses among civilians, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow on Monday, Peskov said “nationalist units deploy tanks, artillery, rocket launchers in residential areas,” drawing the combat actions to these areas, but the Russian special operation was planned considering this circumstance.

Peskov blasted as “provocative” the remarks by US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who alleged that Putin was “disappointed” about the lack of progress in capturing the big cities.

“The mentioned top officials of the US and the EU, apparently, are pushing Russia to storm major cities of Ukraine in order to hold our country responsible for the deaths of civilians. We believe that such a position is provocative.

“At the beginning of the operation, the Russian president did instruct the Defense Ministry to refrain from immediately storming large settlements, including Kyiv, due to the fact that armed nationalist formations are equipping firing points, placing heavy military equipment directly in residential areas.

Maybe he’ll borrow the NATO approach to Serbia and simply cut off the cities’ food, water, and electricity.

There weren’t any. The Kiev nazi western Uke militias attacked eastern separatist militias who grabbed their areas, just as the western ukes grabbed what they could.

In any case, I was only discussing that fighting can and does go on in Ukraine in the spring and summer and always has.

This. We had a chance to integrate Russia as a real partner but we were cheap and our politicians were focused on short term political interests.

We needed giants like George C. Marshall but we got pygmies like Bill Clinton and George Bush.

I don’t think Putin wants the headache of occupying Kiev and winding up with an insurgency every night picking off his tanks with javelins and targeting his troops with the semiautomatic rifles under their mattresses for the next few years. He was hoping he would get his puppet installed in the first few days of the war with the Ukie military running and surrendering. Instead, he met resistance and he is on plan B of making the war an extension of diplomacy by circling large urban areas to get Zelensky to agree to terms about not applying to NATO and enshrining neutrality in their constitution and declaring the 2 Russian ethnic provinces independent republics. I think he has given up on the puppet thing as too costly to achieve

Zelenskyy isn't a fool: he knows the "offer" for him to withdraw to Poland was to enable the West to arrange a capitulation and render the current Ukrainian government as irrelevant as the Polish government in exile in London in 1945.

Zelenskyy knows where Yalta is: Ukraine used to own it.

For all the talk of the Vicious Russians and the Ferocious Ukrainian defense these two sides sure do tiptoe around each other a lot,,,,,

The Ukes claim to have killed 14000 russians in 15 days. With a population of 140M that would equate to about 33,000 US dead in a 15 day war.

The Ukes admit to 1600 dead. With a population of about 40M that would equate to about 13000 US dead in 15 days.

Do you really think they’re “tiptoing?”

pisskov is lying trash and everyone knows it.

Don’t know what artillery, armored divisions, etc, the Ukes have but whatever meager resources they can scrape together are to defend the residential areas the reds are seeking to destroy.

If Zelenskyy is smart, he should just cede the "republics" to Russia along the pre-war line of demarcation. They only exist as a constant source of provocation, like the Saarland after WWI and WWII. Better to let them go. Transnistria should go to Ukraine as compensation or back to Moldova.

Zelenskyy should agree to that plus recognize the annexation of Crimea. No NATO and Ukraine guarantees its neutrality but remains open to the EU just like Austria. Ukraine's territorial integrity has to be guaranteed by Russia and probably the US, with no permanent stationing of foreign forces. Same for Belarus, plus Russia returns to INF, Conventional Forces and OSCE treaties.

Everybody gets something, border disputes and phony "republics" go away, and Putin gets a deal with the only peer he respects: the US.

I thought the Ukrainians were claiming around 6000 - 7000 Russian KIA, which with their 1600 would match the traditional 4:1 kill ratio between attacker and defender.

When you count wounded, that would mean the Russians have suffered about 10% casualties in 3 weeks.

What the hell are you talking about?

They went from being the enemy to getting most favored nation trading status, admission into the G7 which became the G8, etc.

But they threw it all away when they annexed Crimea and sent the “little green men” into eastern Ukraine.

I think that was about D+7 or 8. The 16k figure I saw was on about day 15.

Pretty good strategy. Let them starve to death.

Twenty years was a long time between 1994 and 2014.

MFN doesn't mean squat in a country with no capital, unless it's able to run a predatory mercantilist economy like China.

Real engagement would have meant a Marshall-like plan for the former Communist states with Europe and the US kicking in huge amounts for infrastructure and recapitalization of their economies. It would have also meant engaging the Russians diplomatically a lot more than we did. Instead we kicked them to curb and pretended they didn't exist. We could have had them as real allies against China, but we screwed the pooch completely.

This is saying 12,000, but not sure if it's KIA or total casualties:

Thanks for the link, it was informative.

The 12K they cite are KIA. Enemy wounded are not counted since they’re an unknown.

Don’t know when the 12K in your article were tabulated. The figure I saw was from Friday. Whether 12 or 16K a lot of russians back home will be weeping for their loss.

The cowardly Ukrainians hide their fighters and equipment amongst their women and children.

They are no different than Palestinians in that regard.

Brave, honorable men would meet their enemy in the field. Not hide behind skirts and kindergartens.
