By mitigate the impact, Miss raggedy Ann Psaki of course meant accelerate the impact.

She would not say if the White House had any estimation of how high prices could get, but tried to reassure Americans that Biden was working on the problem.

The only way I'd have been reassured is if he was NOT working on the problem.

.....”We are for all purposes in a state of war with Russia one side will formally declare their intentions at some point. Probably when missiles start to hit Poland or Germany”........

That’s exactly what they’re hoping Putin will do before he’s done. It’s noticable that Biden and NATO speeches are always peppered with warnings of “if” Putin does this or that, and how they will assuredly respond. They draw non -distinct lines so that if and when they’re ready they’ll respond.

They wanted to see what our breaking point was on COVID, now they want to see what our breaking point is on Fuel.

Say I’m an average American worker. Job’s shaky, savings are shrinking, food and heat bills are up, and to get to work I have to pass through two homeless camps that used to be nice neighborhoods. I think I’ll just go out and buy a Tesla!

Better to pump up your tires and drive with a light foot on the gas.

Anybody remember when cars had a vacuum gauge on the dash? That's the perfect indicator for economy.

Back in 2008 when the last price wave hit, a lot of pumps were limiting credit card max purchases to $75. I assume that’s been changed since.

"6 days ago I got home heating oil. 151.9 gallons at $4.63 9/10 for a bill of $704.66."

I applaud your frugality. Last week I paid 4.55 for 655 gallons. Ouch.

Not sure of your stance on a federal per mile tax? Have you factored in that many of our roads/interstates have toll charge?

At any rate, screw the per mile tax charge.

The first fact is roads have to get paid for one way or the other. O&M is the second largest cost behind new construction on a per mile basis. Direct usage taxes are always the most equitable the axiom is use more pay more where no one is subsidizing the others. Electric cars already don’t pay into the system so they already don’t contribute to the Federal nor State or local.systems unless there is a user fee for EVs at the state or local level. Usage fees should also be indexed to the actual damages done to the road surfaces causing the need for the O&M expenses in the first place. It’s been proven with 50+ years if study that the key wearing component on a roadway surface is the pounds per square inch of bearing weight. This has the effect that class 8 vehicles do tens of thousands of times more actual damages per mile than a LDV. Google scholar, science direct, or EBSCO is loaded with quantified study after study with warehouse full of data to.back that up. Usage fees should be indexed to axle weight with the same principle use more pay more and cause more damages pay for those damages.

Freedom of movement is only guaranteed in the sense that one can leave their place of.residence and travel to another location. No where is it a right to drive not only not in the constitution but codified in state law that driving is a licensed privilege issued by the state’s themselves. You are most certainly free to walk, ride a bike or take public transportation or now uber or any other ride for hire approved by the locals or the state’s. Cars are a licenced privilege. Get too many tickets , or too many duis and see how quickly that privilege is revoked.

The alternative to federal per mile use taxes given EVs and increasing fuel.economy standards that don’t come even close to.funding the road systems is to.go to a European style road tax and toll roads in every Highway which most European motorways are tolled in some form. They also have local and national level road use taxes on a monthly or yearly basis called vignettes. Every new country you drive into forces you to buy a current and valid vignette for their road systems those run 40+ euros a month. In addition to those London , Paris and other major cities have congestion taxes and local vignettes too.

Again roads need to be paid for, so how to.collect the trillion dollars needed over the next ten years to upgrade and keep the current roads in service. Gas taxes at their current levels won’t cover a quarter of those costs. So rob the general treasury and use income taxes? Print more debt fiat currency? Or go the European way and use monthly or yearly taxes at the levels that will find the system. There is no free ride someone is paying for the roads to be built and maintained. The users pay, or the tax paying general public does via income tax or the buck get passed to future generations as debt and to this generation as inflation due to fiat currency printing those are the choices the current system is broken it.funds a quarter of the need. The most equitable way is user pays and those who use the most pay the most.

In DFW Texdot is on record with every new road will be a NTTA toll road as Texdot.doesn’t have half the funding it needs to build new roads let alone upkeep the ones it.has. Texdot is selling the middle lanes of the interstates to be converted “managed lanes” with tolls as well this is due to again lack of.funding to build new lanes so they sell ROW and the.toll company.builds the new lanes then collects user fees to pay off the debt and do the O&M this is the other choice of a per mile.tax is not put in. The fact is the Federal government collects one fourth what it needs via gas taxes and Texas gets less than half it needs from gas taxes and those shares are dropping every year due to fuel.economy increases and electric vehicles paying no gas taxes the system is broken and will have to be replaced with one of the above choices. Income taxes, vignettes, tolls or property taxes and or huge per vehicle registration fees. Those are the available income streams one of those must fund the infrastructure. What most people here seem.to want is all the urbanites to pay income tax and property taxes to.find the roads they want to use more.than the average urbanite. Texas is diverting property taxes to.road funding and currently the fedgov is using income taxes from the general fund plus printing debt to.cover the hwy systems. That should be stopped and an equitable system of use more pay more be put in. Don’t want to pay then don’t drive so much it’s fairly.simple. Direct use taxes are always the most equitable and also the easiest to adjust ones behavior to minimise expose to them.

“Obviously, what we’re trying to do is mitigate the impact,” Psaki said.

It’s actually not obvious at all.
