That is because Xi demanded Putin to sit tight while their Olympics was underway. Indirectly Xi screwed up Russia’s battle plan, but he does not care. He may be even enjoying this.
I would think a depleted Russian army makes China’s hegemony over Russian resources (oil/gas/minerals) more possible.
