I spent a month in Antigua as well studying Spanish. Was there for Christmas and New Years. Loved the country.
When people think of Latin America they usually think of Catholicism. Although there are many Catholics in Guatemala, Evangelical Protestants are even more common. Rich people are Catholic, poor people, the Mayan, are Evangelical of some sort.
The other thing that surprised me is how prominent and popular LDS is.
