You could be correct about that but IMO he is too stupid to consider optional bs. I had thought he would say it was a Ukrainian mortar, but no, he is too stupid for that. So he obsessed about mortar shell damage and never sought another angle.
A simple mind will fixate on one thing and one thing only.
