Many electric cars owners have been reveling in their purchases as gasoline prices reach record highs.
The national average for a gallon of gas hit $4.25 on Wednesday, up from $4.17 the day before, and it is expected to rise as the fallout of economic sanctions levied on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine continues to trickle through the petroleum industry.
U.S. electricity prices, which are heavily regulated in most states, have remained stable, however, and the cost to charge an electric car is still much lower than filling up one with an internal combustion engine, but only if you have a place to plug it in at home or a lot of time on your hands.

So gas prices need to go up some more.
My socialist dem friends dumped their gasoline powered cars and bought 2 EV’s this week. I think it was about $140,000.
Probably already stuck their “F*CK Fossil Fuels”, “Science is Real” “Vote Blue” bumper stickers on them.
Well I bought a TESLA almost a year ago to this day. Didn’t do it to be green. Thought they were good cars and I’m a gadget guy.
Was just texting my son and dad. I drove over 15k miles and spent about $350 on electricity, including superchargers and and charging at home. I can charge for free at work, which means I don’t really pay at all unless I’m on the road. Had to charge a bit at home over Xmas since I was going to/from airport and not charging at work. So, my at home charging costs were under $50 for this year. I spent about $750 after gov rebates getting a home charger, though, which I don’t really use. I could have saved money by just using the existing outlets for “trickle charging”, but the high speed charging at home comes in handy when we’re about to go on a road trip or coming back from one. So, I think it is worth it.
I timed this whim well. A year later the car would cost more, etc. Also, where I live electricity is fairly cheap, under 9 cents/kWh.
Within the last year I also bought a solar system that seems to cover about 2/3 of our needs 3200 sq ft house and will probably pay for itself w/in 7 years or so. Probably less after electricity goes up due to “Let’s Go Brandon”. After rebates our system was about $4500. If we had tried to “go off the grid” and covered all of our electric needs, the cost would have more than doubled.
Voted for Trump and hate “Green New Deal” but don’t think people should dismiss ev’s or cheap solar home systems, especially given what “Let’s Go Brandon” is doing.
I wonder if they will break even before their EVs need to be replaced?
So you justify your Tesla on tax rebates and you get to charge it “free” at work? i.e. it’s cheaper for YOU because somebody else is picking up the tab. R-i-i-i-g-h-t.
After rebates our system was about $4500.

Wonderful, little rebate elves sent you a check.
*** I wonder if they will break even before their EVs need to be replaced? ***
Considering they are almost 80, and one has early dementia...
Redundant
Ah! Well, I reckon that investment strategy is not high on their bucket list. :)
No tax rebate for the TESLA car. There was a rebate for the at home charger which I don’t really use.
Don’t blame me that I can charge for free at work. If my employers want to provide this, so be it.
I didn’t buy the car for that. When I bought it a year ago, gas wasn’t so expensive.
5 min vs 3 hrs...and I can drive anywhere and back.
Put your plug up your...
At least you’re honest about it.
But your tax rebates don’t come out of thin air or free. Having a hard time understanding why the government/taxpayer needs to give you money for your decisions.
Socialists buying 2 cars for $140,000. Socialism to many devotees means everyone being equal beneath them.
Agree totally about how the tax rebates don’t come out of thin air or are free. Also, I’m fairly well off and don’t really think they should go to me for subsidizing my solar panels, etc.
On the other hand, they are there and so why shouldn’t I potentially take advantage of them?
Since TESLAs are fairly expensive, the small rebate for the charger was irrelevant for my decision. I didn’t get any rebate for the purchase of the car. Now rebates only go to GM, etc. ev cars, which are inferior to TESLAs, in my opinion. The rebates are roughly 7k and when they are gone, GM will just charge about 7k more for their ev cars. Go figure.
On the other hand, the gov paying about 1/3 for my cheap solar system, costing roughly 7k, slightly influenced me to get this.
Again, I’m not a green new deal guy, but small solar systems on roofs of average sized homes like mine that cover roughly 2/3 of my electricity make sense to me, as opposed to trillions of dollars for windmills that are much less efficient. I would agree with you, though, that somebody like me should not get gov subsidies for this.
The solar subsidies have gone down a fair amount over the last few years before I took the plunge. Fortunately, BBB failed which would have funded things like I benefited from more.
a Govt rebate??......What??..I don't have an EV and I haven't received a Thank-You note from you yet?..../s
As they say in France, “Merci”. (Thank you!)
I’m a longtime republican and conservative.
I bought a used BMWi3 about two years ago. Glad I did.
I’ll probably get the new model that is coming out this summer, the i4. 0 to 60 in about 3 seconds. 300 mile range.
I did something similar.
In fall of 2019 I bought an 18 solar panel system and a used BMWi3, with the range extender. About 40K for everything.
My brother just bought a brand new gas guzzling suv, about three months ago. I begged him not to do it. He got angry with me. Today, he’s wondering why he didn’t listen to me.
My EV is fully charge when I wake up every morning.
My gas guzzling Ford explorer now costs 100 dollars to fill it, every week. Its 4.45 a gallon today. Next week, 5 bucks.
Reality. We have Marxist thugs in the Whitehouse who stole the last election. I hedged my bets and got an EV and solar panels two years ago in case this happened.
