SpaceX's Starlink was told by some governments to block Russian news sources from Starlink.
On Saturday, Elon Musk tweeted the company will not do so "unless at gunpoint."
Musk had previously shared concerns over Starlink systems being targeted in Ukraine.
SpaceX's Elon Musk tweeted on Saturday that Starlink was told by some governments to block Russian news sources.
Musk said on Twitter: "Starlink has been told by some governments (not Ukraine) to block Russian news sources."
"We will not do so unless at gunpoint," he added. "Sorry to be a free speech absolutist."

Buying a Tesla belies your tagline.
Well Musk is apparently a Russian stooge, too. ALL we are seeing is Western disinformation. The only thing we are permitted to see from Russians are the supposed Russian soldiers being forced to make these ridiculous mea culpas. I’ve spent days trying to find out what the Russian cease fire and settlement negotiating points are. Impossible to find, totally squelched by the NATO countries’ “free press”. We had much more verifiable information coming out of Wuhan in December 2019 than we do during this Western disinformation full court press. The United States and most people on FR did not learn a thing from the two year Covid misinformation tsunami of Western nation lies. The entire Western World (no longer the Free World, by the way) has taken this narrative hook, line and sinker. The results of this very well could be more catastrophic than the price paid for our stupidity the last two years, believing the obvious lies being spread.
Musk is a hero for our times. Rare to see a prominent man with such courage and conviction. Bravo!
Authoritarian control freaks went after Musk. Wow, but not surprised.
“Buying a Tesla belies your tagline.”
LOL, stand by, I’m working on this comment.
“Buying a Tesla belies your tagline.”
I think I got it. I can ‘claim’ to own a Tesla and beat up on people who drive gasoline cars (like some here do), but not actually buy one or own one. That will give moral superiority over those planet destroyers.
That’s probably the best of both worlds, so I’ll join the Tesla club here and beat up on those who don’t drive electric vehicles, but save myself a ton of money on an otherwise worthless car that would spend most of its time in the garage anyway (at least from what I’ve read).
I can write Musk a check separately to thank him for his support of the First Amendment.
I’ll be at Mickey D’s if you need me.
“That’s it, I’M BUYING A TESLA. I may never drive the thing, but I owe Musk something for defending the First Amendment.”
They are A LOT of fun BobL. Especially the performance models.
I have just about forgotten how to pump gas.
Bonus - #1 American-Made rated car (Model 3)
Bonus 2 - It’s still worth 90% of what I paid in Sept 2019.
“I’ll be at Mickey D’s if you need me.”
Why would you eat that crap!
By this logic Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and China must be your friends as well.
I hate to admit it, but I have been thinking the same. I always try and spend my money where it’s appreciated and the company has patriot values or better yet anonymous political posturing. I really dislike it when a product I use goes political.
Sorry BobL, after thinking about it more and with all the crap Musk gets i have to add some more to my post about while i genuinely like the dude..
All my Model 3 warranty work has been done in my garage by their “Rangers” - a seat switch, one recall(trunk wiring harness) and a camera failure that I caused.
Of course you would need a service center if something big goes.
Basically only need to maintain of wiper blades, tires and washer fluid.
Instant heat in winter
Can watch whatever I want on TV in comfort while daughters take their piano lessons.
360 degree cameras in sentry mode to bust door dingers.
No window scraping in winter - remote defrost/heat control.
Elon Musk payed back his loans early while others failed to.
Elon regularly calls Biden out on twitter with his huge following.
Libs/bots are starting to turn on him in his twitter feed.
Don’t even get me started on Spacex. Cool as hell watching those things land.
And get his - after he sent those starlink internet receivers to Ukraine he followed up with a software update to reduce its power consumption and enabled roaming by turning on a phased array antenna to reduce ability to target.
I just don’t get some of the hate i read on some of my favorite conservative sites.
I’m beginning to wish he were a natural born citizen. I used to hate him.
Instead of buying a Tesla and supporting the communist agenda, subscribe to STARLINK and support free speech.
“...subscribe to STARLINK and support free speech.”
Now that is a worthwhile idea.
And the more they make Vlad Putin out to be the big bad boogeyman and this guy Zelensky an icon the more troubled my spirit becomes. There is something sinister in it and aside from the “deep state” aspect, I don’t know what it could be.
“Instead of buying a Tesla and supporting the communist agenda, subscribe to STARLINK and support free speech.”
That’s a thought...hadn’t considered it, but worth looking into!
“We will not do so unless at gunpoint”
Hank Reardon, is that you? Why do I get the impression Musk is an “Atlas Shrugged” fan?
Do you think Musk would run for President?
“I just don’t get some of the hate i read on some of my favorite conservative sites.”
Sorry, count me in on that. My problems are two-fold - first the subsidies that they got (even if later repaid) meant that they used the government for initial development, whereas everyone else has to present a convincing case to the private sector. And second, the way we’re getting pushed by the government...to force EVs on literally everyone, particularly when their driving cost ‘savings’ can only be justified by artificially fuel prices, given what’s in store as we go to ‘Green Energy’. Example, in Germany electricity now costs 37 cents per kWh, more than 3 times the US average - that’s our future and at that price there isn’t even a per-mile saving for an EV.
As to ‘saving the planet’, that’s pretty lame. If you want to save the planet, then the way to do that is to pack everyone into small apartments in cities and make it next to impossible to drive a car, any car...and to glassify China and India (and Russia, for that matter), because they’re not playing ball on this Green New Deal stuff. If you ignore them...then what the West does is in the noise, since they have about 3 billion people (plus most of the Third World), compared to our side having under 1 billion.
So, bottom line:
1. Tesla and other companies should be and are free to make EVs, but not with financing from the same government that gave us Solyndra.
2. When the MARKETPLACE determines we should transition to EVs (or a mix of EVs and ICE’s), then it’s fine by me. But NO PUSHING the outcome - each must stand on its own and make the case.
3. We also don’t like people talking down to us, telling us to “Get with it, EVs are the future”. Maybe they are the future, but if it’s due to EVs being forced on us, then it’s a pretty shitty future and we’ll continue to fight to prevent it.
As to your vehicle, much can be done, or is being done already in ICE cars, such as remote starting for warm-up and defrost, TV of course, Alarm systems and cameras. While I agree that ICE vehicles have more maintenance (such as oil changes and trans fluid), Teslas do have friction brakes and while they may not get as much use, they have to be maintained, along with cabin air filters (which I hope they have). Overall, that part of the savings is quite modest compared to the other costs associated with both types of cars.
Agree on SpaceX, by the way.
As to Musk on Twitter...good to hear!
