Sympathy for the outnumbered and outgunned defenders of Kyiv has led to the exaggeration of Russian setbacks, misunderstanding of Russian strategy, and even baseless claims from amateur psychoanalysts that Putin has lost his mind.
A more sober analysis shows that Russia may have sought a knockout blow, but always had well-laid plans for follow-on assaults if its initial moves proved insufficient.

For CNN its “ We hate Trump” = “The Ukraine supported Biden” = “We will be the propaganda arm for the Ukraine”.
Wow! DM sobered up.
I am hoping, perhaps naively, that Russia did not deliver a one time knock out blow because they didn’t want a high civilian death rate.
They are fellow Russians after all.
I don’t know that this was the motivation. Just would like to think so.
You are correct.
The rooskies cannot go in with a shock and awe campaign if they intend to hold the country. That will alienate the population, who are in fact related by blood to them. They are going to have to go in softly, and strike where necessary, destabilize as appropriate, and keep life for the average Ukrainian as close to normal as is possible in a war zone. There will be resistance, but the rooskies will wait them out, and clear them out when appropriate for them to maintain order.
There are a lot of “safe space” Freepers who do not understand that argument is a process the refines ideas by forcing others to back up their claims and fostering thought and reason. The testing of ideas openly, even when it gets a little bitter, it’s still has real value.
If there are delicate Freepers want to be in a hive mind forum there is always DU. You can read a 100 comment thread there and they basically all say the same trite thoughts and slogans repetitively.
and that raises the question:
how do you force a country that if it didn’t before, does now, hate Putin, certainly the large majority of the population, to accept a government that Putin wants (Russia-friendly, non-aligned, buffer, whatever) without the total occupation of the country?
You try to put in puppets as governors of all the provinces and mayors of the big cities and so on, but these people will tend to be assassinated in short order
how many Russian troops and police will be needed in Ukraine to be able to make a buffer government viable?
I think he genuinely thought everyone except the far western part around Lviv would view him as a liberator
they don’t
There is no oil and little gas worth extraction in Ukraine.
There are 6-8% nationalists according to polls, most Galician carpetbaggers. They can be chased back to Galicia and quietly hate further.
At which point Putin decides the rest of the world can join Russia in living a miserable existence and launches the nukes.
Agreed I believe a satellite state is the goal.
Explain to me how history is immaterial to me. The fact that Russia ruled Ukraine is WHY a lot of Ukrainians hate Russians.
Why do you think some Ukrainians collaborated with Nazis during WWII? It wasn't because they liked what Hitler was selling, it was because it was a chance to get back on Russians.
For most of history, Ukrainians just have to take it. I'm just saying, for many Ukrainians, if they ever get a chance to give it back, they will gladly take it.
Russians talk a good game about helping their brother Slavs, but how often is it more than talk?
Entropy12, please tell me what I've said that isn't supported by history?
No, not really.
They hate each other about as much as we hate the British.
That’s what Xi said.
“I donâÂÂt have the answer.”
I do.
The goal is for the outcome to be advantageous to China.
The Kremlin is now totally subservient to China’s wishes.
The advice Putin gets is the advice China wants him to have.
His oligarchs are totally dependent on the CCP and know it.
This Ukraine disaster will lock Russia into China’s control, like North Korea.
If Zelensky had run away, Nord Stream 2 would still be in business and Germany would not have committed to increase military spending to 2% of GDP. Germany has gone from offering 5,000 helmets to providing 500 stingers. Quoting the coroner of Munchkinland, Germany's relationship with Putin is "no only merely dead, its really most sincerely dead." And, that is very good news.
Roggio's last sentence is about helping Ukraine, which may be a lower priority than hurting Russia.
Why is Kharkiv resisting like tigers?
If it’s only the Galician nationalists who hate Putin?
[For CNN its “ We hate Trump” = “The Ukraine supported Biden” = “We will be the propaganda arm for the Ukraine”.]
The issue is realism. News analysis is supposed to provide likely outcomes, not build castles in the sky. What CNN is doing is the equivalent of telling its audience that a terminal patient is likely to make a full recovery. That’s a Disney movie ending, not reality.
I have been hammered several times on different threads, but I will try again. There are two Ukraines, one made up of people who think and talk just as the Russians do. The other is the group of Ukrainians who all speak Ukrainian, who remember every blow of Stalin, and can point to each plot of ground and tell you which family owned it before the Russians came in.
The real Ukrainians ran into the cities, getting weapons and training to defend against the Russians, the Russian supporters stayed home, in the villages along the roads you see the columns in. Putin has most of the die hard Ukrainian supporters either in the cities or running away to other countries. He knows where all his enemies are.
Here comes the pivot is right.
+1
It’s truly Disgusting the level of lies from the media around the entire world.
You really have to look hard to find the truth, or as close as it gets.
I wouldn’t think Russia has any intention of occupying the whole of Ukraine.
Up to the Dnieper river would make sense though.
