Sympathy for the outnumbered and outgunned defenders of Kyiv has led to the exaggeration of Russian setbacks, misunderstanding of Russian strategy, and even baseless claims from amateur psychoanalysts that Putin has lost his mind.
A more sober analysis shows that Russia may have sought a knockout blow, but always had well-laid plans for follow-on assaults if its initial moves proved insufficient.

Which it was since the time of Catherine the Great.
Correct. Biden is not in charge and the whole world knows it.
What is laughable is the Leftist kooks in charge in America thought they could steal the election and then run the world but they cannot in reality manage a hot dog stand. They think running the world is as easy as managing a college dorm social calendar.
Everything the Left touches turns to S**t !
Uh, the Crimea was part of Russia back at the time of the American revolution.
“Uh, the Crimea was part of Russia back at the time of the American revolution.”
So was Alaska.
Russia sold Alaska. Kruschev assigned the Crimea administratively to Ukraine when it was and administrative district of the USSR.

And?
Yes I am aware of that. Many here on FR don’t seem to understand it though.
But it looks more like Russia’s plans are that of surrounding the cities only at this point...other than perhaps some small teams to search it out.
Sigh. The Black Sea gas deposits were not discovered until AFTER the Ukraine broke from Russia/Soviet Union in 1991. They Ukrainians were in the process of developed the gas fields when Russia invaded and re-took the Crimea in 2014. Google it.

Sigh.....go grab your rifle and pack, parachute in and take it back if you think it is not theirs. I will support you the whole way.
Afghanistan is unlike any other country, been independent for 1000 yrs all the great powers over the years have tried and failed.
I get it, but you said:
“Uh, the Crimea was part of Russia back at the time of the American revolution.”
Would it be acceptable for Russia to invade Alaska based on this principal? Would you accept Mexico’s invasion of Texas?
Explaining historical facts is not taking a position one way or the other, grow up.
“Who was in the room with Biden and Putin when the strategy was discussed?”
People ought to be demanding the release of the full unredacted transcript.

“I’m sorry I’m so behind the technology, but what the heck is the flame coming out of the back of the launcher, when there’s nothing coming out of the missile? How does the launcher work?”
It’s a booster that pushes the missile clear of the launch tube before the sustainer motor kick in.
“Is taking the country really the objective? Or is the goal to force Ukraine to become a non-aligned buffer state? Or to install a Russia-friendly government? Or to push Russia’s border further from Moscow? I don’t have the answer.”
Yes you do. It’s all of the above.
“Are there not any daring imaginative Ukrainian commanders?”
The Ukranians attacked and destroyed the very front of the column, on a two lane road, thus bringing to a stop the entire column as the wreckage precluded the column from proceeding forward. So for the moment, the column is stalled; the Russians are bringing in reinforcements.
