Actually, more like imperial Russia. Ukraine was part of Russia. Most of the Ukraine came under Russian control at the end of the 18th century. A small portion in the west was under Austria. Why does no one know the history?
Know the history?
You make a good point. I humbly suggest that Americans are still under the influence of Stalinist thinking or propaganda. Stalin was very effective at convincing people across the world that they are one people, when in reality theirs is a unique culture with their own language. Americans, who lump all Asians together, who cannot tell the difference between the Japanese and the Koreans even when hearing them speaking, who can’t tell the difference between Portugese and Spanish, who think Puerto Ricans are not Americans, are probably too ignorant or stupid to sit for a discussion of Ukrainian independence, much less history.
These people haven’t the foggiest notion why the Soviet Union fell apart in the first place. Reagan’s saying “tear down this wall” must’ve done it. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Now any anti-Reagan should be able to just have some speeches and a tank or two that’ll pull it all back together.
There is a status quo superstition at work as they assume the way it is, must be how it was and how it should be, ignorant superstition.
I was in Windsor Ontario for a church meeting as a singer and musician years ago (1995?) there was earnest concern among them there about Quebec Independence. They could understand that the Quebecois were their own people but they said, “We’d be cut off from the east!” (Oh, the horror!) I was politely silent during this discussion, but they really could not say what was the great harm in those words “cut off”. It is all a moot point now of course. The people have rejected “independence and socialism”, which is what that was really about, and the reds seem to be happy to be taking over all of Canada.
Thanks Rider!
