I think the only human alive in the USA in 1860 that would actually fight a war to keep states in IN the union was Lincoln.

The movie “Copperhead” on Amazon is a very good and thoughtful movie about Americans in upstate NY during the Civil War who opposed the war. There are some very excellent conversations about the constitutionality of the war. I highly recommend.

You’re saying there were no volunteers?
You’re saying State Militias and State Volunteer Infantry and Cavalry didn’t fight in the war?
The more radical abolitionist elements wished foremost to destroy the south and kill as many white slave owners and their families as possible
The purging and cleansing as they deemed it
John Brown was their tool
Preserving the union was certainly a better sounding war cry lol
And “let’s go south to free the darkies while we ignore our own”didn’t sound too appealing either
I’m extremely leery of an armed civil war or regional insurrection now having been around 2-3 of varying intensity ....Sierra Leone, Columbia , Haiti...more a series of low violence to high violence coups centered in PAP...
Our tools of destruction are off the charts compared to muskets and cannon
Separation would be preferable but as many have pointed out
Cities with high concentrations of black voters and white leftists are the problem
Few rural areas outside black belt and delta southern counties and Indian reservations are democrat voting today....very few in comparison
I think relegating cultural laws to states would help enormously and a decrease in federalization....something Abe enhanced more than any other American who lived before or since...that war diminished state sovereignty precipitously
