A top Chinese state media editor said Beijing needs to back Russia over Ukraine because it needs Moscow's support to assert dominance over Taiwan.
Unlike many other nations, China has not condemned President Vladimir Putin for ordering troops into eastern Ukraine, an act that Western powers consider to be a springboard for a full invasion of Ukraine.
The US and UK announced landmark sanctions on Russian companies and individuals as a result, and the EU also agreed to impose sanctions.
China's foreign ministry, however, said Wednesday that it opposes the use of the measures.
Writing on his WeChat blog Tuesday, Ming Jinwei, a senior editor at the state-run Xinhua news agency, said it is in China's interests to support Russia from afar, as Beijing will need Moscow's support when it wants to force its hand on Taiwan independence.
China has long claimed the island nation of Taiwan, which has been self-ruling for decades, as part of its territory. It has in recent months amped up its threats to engage in military conflict if Taiwan continued to assert its independence.

We need backups/disaster recovery plans for anything we depend on Taiwan for.
And we also want to keep technology out of Taiwan’s hands that China doesn’t have.
No surprise. Putin has been actively consolidating Chinese support for months. Including increased sales of energy to China, who need it desperately.
And the remainder of the long game some of us predicted is now demonstrably proven.
That didn’t take long. The Taiwanese will now flee for their lives. If there’s any way to make lemonade of the continuing disaster that is Joe Biden, I can’t imagine what it is. Taiwan is gone. I suspect a Russo-Sino conspiracy hatched long ago. The Ukraine debacle is test of US resolve. (Epic Fail) Taiwan is the objective. China-Russia collaboration is the deterrent to any US response.
And don’t forget …. Pedo-joe wants you and I to bow down and worship him
China can and pretty much will take Taiwan with a telephone call. America weak, Biden weaker.
“Germany must back Japan over Pearl Harbor, so it gets support when it fights for Russia.”
How did that work out for them?
We need backups/disaster recovery plans for anything we depend on Taiwan for.
And we also want to keep technology out of Taiwan’s hands that China doesn’t have.

Total B.S. We should defend Taiwan like it is Washington freaking D.C. The U.S. doesn’t have a better ally in the world than Taiwan. Taiwanese love the U.S. more than Americans do.
Do you really want to go without a plan B to keep technology out of China? You're even betting that the US will defend Taiwan so incredibly well that none of the manufacturing in Taiwan that we depend on gets destroyed.
Plan B is to be able to quickly fire up manufacturing done in China and Taiwan here in the US. And lets hope we never have to resort to it.
Imagine if we had outsourced all of our manufacturing to Japan in the 1920s when we were still relatively on friendly terms.
Why?
"Washington freaking D.C." is owned by Communist China already, and it is run by Corrupt Unaccountable Deep Swamp Public Masters.
They even have their own Border Fence.
Exactly.
Contingency/disaster recovery plans need to be made for items we depend on from even the friendliest countries.
How much more so for enemies like China or countries that are potentially in harms way for a conflict like Taiwan.
“Washington freaking D.C.” is owned by Communist China already, and it is run by Corrupt Unaccountable Deep Swamp Public Masters.
They even have their own Border Fence.

Then we should defend Taiwan BETTER than we would defend Washington D.C.
Ukraine and Taiwan are not the same. The two situations are not analogous.
Consider:
If Taiwan loses, China wins.
If Taiwan wins, China loses.
If Ukraine wins, China wins.
If Ukraine loses, everybody else wins, because China loses.
For the foreseeable future, all geopolitical questions hinge on China.
Maybe we could have a real economy again with manufacturing leading the way.
We could make stuff here again. Sounds like a plan to me.
