MOSCOW (AP) — The White House on Tuesday began referring to Russian troop deployments in eastern Ukraine as an “invasion” after initially hesitating to use the term — a red line that President Joe Biden has said would result in the U.S. levying severe sanctions against Moscow.
Several European leaders said earlier in the day that Russian troops have moved into rebel-held areas in eastern Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recognized their independence — but some indicated it was not yet the long-feared, full-fledged invasion.
Later, the White House signaled a shift in its own position.
“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, principal deputy national security adviser. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

I think Russia can take whatever they wish, but I don’t think they can hold anything but the Donbass area.
Ukraine’s defense is purely defensive. They need offensive weapons to have a real deterrent and play this dirty game the way the Russians play it.
For example, ship killer Harpoon misilles, could be put in Ukraine and any invasion could be met with taking out Russian ships. This can go on forever, with no serious deterrent.
The issue as I see it is that anytime America is perceived as being weak (whenever we have a weak pResident) evil shit happens around the world.
That's been my anecdotal experience in my near 60 years on this planet.
Dumb bastards have to define invasion.
“Parading the Red Army into Donbas was the obvious move from Putin.”
Russians have always been good chess players - no difference here.
“There is a fundamental misunderstanding in FR about superiority.
Russia exports oil and gas. The US exports bytes of entertainment or advertising.
Russia runs a trade surplus. The US a trade deficit.
The US has debt / GDP ratio well over 100%. Russia is 20%.
Russia has plenty of food and the oil and gas to fuel transport of it from farm to store shelves. There is no path to cutting them off from food. 23% of Russia is obese. 55% overweight. I won’t bother with the comparison there.”
Hmm so you mean Russia is superior to America ?
I wouldn’t count on Ukraine’s defense. Their generals and elites are no doubt mostly in the Kremlin’s pay. Corruption is endemic there. Recall during the 2014 period when the Ukrainians caught a bunch of Russian invaders only to open the jails and let them go free. Germany and Brandon will kick in some more foreign cash and the Ukrainian elites will be happy. There isn’t going to be a general war here because there is too much money to be made with the status quo.
Y = C + I + G + (X − M) The definition of GDP. Measured in meaningless created currency by a central bank. But ignoring that, notice the G parameter in the equation.
It’s Government Spending. Every dollar spent gooses Y. Even when that spending is not from taxes raised. It’s also when it is debt, which is about 33% of spending.
So you have this parameter Y defined as increasing when government spends more money, perhaps on food stamps. The more you spend on food stamps, the more your GDP.
You still excited about the GDP metric?
Apple’s annual revenues are 1/4 of Russia’s GDP. The sales of Intel outside of America are worth more than Russian export of gas...
Could you provide sources where you read about “Russian superiority” ? Seriously, I want to learn something new...
Putting on nursing cap. 👩🏼⚕️ Putin’s face looks like moon face of steroids. Wondering what is ailing him. Could explain his current moves against Ukraine. Last stand for his legacy. 🏨
I think I just provided instruction on what GDP means. As for Apple and Intel sales, don’t measure them in dollars, a substance created from nothingness.
Measure them in joules. How do they stack up then?
Measure them in joules. “
You can measure them in dollars, euros, yuans, gold, corn or joules. Annual sales of Apple are worth twice as much as total output of Russia's oil & gas sector.
I don’t think you know what a joule is.
An apt observation, NN. He does look a tad puffy. The world has gotten so full of disinformation that it’s a real challenge to figure out what’s true. To me, China is a larger threat to us so Putin hasn’t alarmed me - but we’ll see!
Annual income of Apple could buy nearly twice the amount of “joules” the Russians sell. It’s that simple.
