He did not get a “more serious strand” of COVID-19. He got a normal one and, because he didn’t do more to stop its progression, he ended up with more serious consequences.
This is definitely a place where monoclonal antibodies could have helped, if his O2 and availability would have together allowed.
Of course, there are other therapeutics, but I can vouch for a close relative that even those are not assured of keeping COVID complications away.
