Catch of the day! Whopping 900lb, 13ft alligator that feasted on livestock around a south Florida lake for 80 years is shot dead by a hunter

This whopping beast gives a whole new meaning to catch of the day.

A Mississippi hunter has caught and killed an 80-year-old, 905lb alligator that measures 13feet 4inches in length at a lake in southern Florida.

But even this monster - an 80-year-old who was known to feast on livestock venturing too near to its lake - isn't the largest caught in Florida. The record for the longest alligator caught goes to a 14ft 3.5inch beast caught in Lake Washington in Brevard County and the heaviest was a 1,043lb one in Orange Lake in Alachua County

The hunt for the massive alligator began for Borries after his friend told him about the creature which was reportedly around since his childhood.

'This guy said he’d seen the gator since he was a child. It was time for the gator to go because some of the calves were disappearing,' Borries told WWXV25. 'So, he was down deer hunting with me, and he asked me if I wanted to come and hunt the gator.

'I said, "Absolutely." To me it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.'

Borries found the gator on a private lake in Okeechobee County about 500 yards away using the scope of his 7mm STW rifle.

The creature was then shot at the top of its head after moving 180 yards closer to Borries.

The hunter then pulled the 80-year-old creature out of the bottom of the lake and was taken aback by its enormous size.

'I had no idea the magnitude of how big his body was until we pulled him completely out of the lake,' Borries told McClatchy News.

'It had been suspected of eating some of the local livestock around the lake and was considered a threat.'

(After for disappearing for 6 or 7 years after The Golden Girls, her career began a comeback with Lake Placid, a movie about an enormous and strangely northerly alligator. It was a small part in a bad movie, but she totally stole the show as the most lovable villain ever. “Frankly, I’m rooting for the alligator.”)

I don’t like snakes either. When I was a little girl, my cousin killed a water moccasin with a hoe. She was only a teenager at the time, and boy, was that impressive!

If that’s the story that made headlines, then I remember it. It was very sad.

They’d have been better off catching it and training it to eat the Burmese pythons the idiots released into the swamp in Florida that are now breeding out of control. Gators are opportunistic feeders so they would have to be taught to track the snakes. After all, that’s what they do anyway.

I did a lot of fishing on Big Orange and Little Orange lakes in Alachua County when I was a kid.

Monster largemouth bass and great bluegill/brim fishing. We saw some big gators and if you went out there at night with a spotlight it was creepy. There are way more gators in the lake than you think!

Fond memories.

They were around when I was a kid, but not like they are now. Now they are way too abundant. Not endangered by any means.

If you’ve ever been on Kennedy Space Center it would spook you. Game preserve and there are a LOT of gators there. One had to keep an eye out at night walking between buildings. 🐊

Gators will never get as big as they used to because of hunting and sprawl. That’s why the bigger gators being harvested of late have came out of states other than Florida. Alabama being the prime example.

The part that interested me was the 7MM STW.

https://www.americanhunter.org/content/an-ode-to-the-7mm-stw/

If he killed the gator from 500 yards, he is really a great shot. Or heavily relying on technology. Range finder and advanced scope.

Either way, this shot is almost like the one made by Billy Dixon at Adobe Wall II. (his famous shot was 3/4 of a mile With a Sharps, in June 27, 1874).

I’d just as soon get rid of every last one of them. They’re a great mascot, but other than that, I’d like there not to be any more of them. A few at a farm would be enough for the whole state.
