Somehow, while most of us were ignoring Ukraine just like we always have done, its independence has become Our Problem and we are blundering into war with Russia thanks to what, exactly?

No we are not. No one has advocated the US go to war with Russia.
If you want to say war can happen by accident. There is no way I can refute that. An accident could have happened between US and Russian forces when both were in Syria together.
BUT no one has advocated war with Russia.
