UNC is not the oldest public university. William and Mary is and Rutgers is 2nd. The only two public schools older than the US.

College of Charleston was founded in 1770.
Harvard is the oldest. It was founded in 1636. Followed by William & Mary in 1693 and St. John’s College - Annapolis in 1696.
