I believe the situation now is roughly analogous. The Germans aren't even going to send lethal aid to Ukraine. Some other NATO members seem to be ready to do so, but other governments think that Putin is only blustering. In fact, some of our own foreign policy elites are in denial too. The West is divided--and not ready for a war mentally or materially.
The American public is war weary. And the U.S. Government is in the hands of an incompetent cabal fronted by a senile fool who just tacitly gave the Russians a "green light" for a minor incursion.
Ukraine is screwed.
“As much as we tend to condemn Chamberlain and Daladier for selling out the Czechs at Munich in 1938, the hard truth is that there was scant public support in Britain and France to resort to war to stop Hitler at that point in time.”
Very insightful. Truth be told, had Chamberlain asked for war in 1938, his government would have been immediately deposed with a no confidence vote in Parliament. That was only 20 years after WWI and the British people would have revolted right then had Chamberlain wanted the war to resume.
It's a little known fact that Poland Joined Hitler in Dismembering Czechoslovakia.
NATO without Germany is an absurdity.
I have wondered since 1989 when Germany would pick sides and get back in the game.
We are about to find out.
