Not exactly the same but remember Bernie Getz was not guilty by self defense for shooting the three buttheads on the subway. But he spent a year in jail in a separate trial for using an un-registered gun. His lawyer’s name was Limp Dick.
Also remember that the NYC’s prosecutors got Goetz sued in a civil action to essentially impoverish him for life.
