If Putin wanted to invade Ukraine, why hasn’t he already done so, instead of allowing weapons and trainers to flood in for months? Because he wants a diplomatic solution. Our idiot prefers a war, with horrible consequences for Ukraine and possibly escalation to global nuclear war, because he’d take political heat for “selling out” Ukrainian independence and his financial cronies. Theory: Russia’s Grand Strategy remains that they need a territorial buffer between Europe and Moscow.
Nato expansion to the East must therefore be prevented. Ukraine, Finland & Sweden are all making noises about joining.
If Putin invades the Ukraine with a view toward taking the entire country he most certainly prevents the Ukraine from gaining Nato membership... but Finland & Sweden join Nato immediately out of self-preservation.
So Putin is trying to get cute about what his objectives are because he doesn’t want to win a war at the price of p*ssing away the larger strategic objective.
