Australia, Japan sign defense pact as China concerns loom

SYDNEY (AP) — The leaders of Japan and Australia signed a “landmark” defense agreement Thursday that allows closer cooperation between their militaries and stands as a rebuke to China's growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met in a virtual summit to sign the Reciprocal Access Agreement, the first such defense pact signed by Japan with any country other than the United States.

The agreement follows more than a year of talks between Japan and Australia aimed at breaking down legal barriers to allow the troops of one country to enter the other for training and other purposes.

“Japan is our closest partner in Asia as demonstrated by our special strategic partnership — Australia’s only such partnership,” Morrison said. “An equal partnership, shared trust between two great democracies committed to the rule of law, human rights, free trade and a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Kishida hailed the agreement as “a landmark instrument which will elevate security cooperation between the nations to new heights.”

While China wasn’t mentioned, its significance at the signing was implicit.

Australia has gone full on CCP. I guess the tyrants in Australia want to protect their power?

It is an obvious thing to do. China has been pressuring Australia ever since Trump convinced Australia not to allow China to take over their telecomumunications network.

Australia is one of the few countries standing up to China.

China hates Japan.

Aussies would fight for sure. But, it would be difficult for sure. The country is about two thirds the size of continental U.S. But, population is only 28M of which 90% live along the Pacific crescent. Consequently, the Chinese should the desire to do so would have very little difficulty establishing a strong presence in Australia.

The Chinese have to get to Australia first.

There is a lot of Ocean around Australia. Australia is getting a few nuke attack submarines from the USA. It is one of the things France was upset about.

It the Australian government were smart, they would re-invigorate the Australian militia forces. They did very well in WWII. Re-institute the policy of Universal Military Service which was eliminated in the 1970's.

It would make Australia a much tougher nut to crack.

Agree with your comments. However, Japan never made it to Australia during WWII. We (US) blocked Japan from succeeding. The Battle of the Coral Sea pretty much put a stop to that.

However, Japan never made it to Australia during WWII.

There were about 100 air attacks on Australia by Japan during WWII.

Wouldn’t doubt it. But, Australia was not invaded nor occupied by the Japanese.

There is also a book detailing the campaign.

The book is told from the Australian side, mostly. It is clear the Author hated General McArthur.

I would like to read the American commander's side of the story, as well.
