Lee Iacocca, who helped developed the Mustang for Ford, joined Chrysler and at least paid back that bail out to the Government about 7 years ahead of schedule.

GM on the other hand repaid the loan portion of the bailout ahead of schedule, with interest. It used TARP money ($49.5B) it had already received but hadn’t spent. Taxpayers are still stuck with GM stock that isn’t worth what was paid for it.

Not a fan of either brand now...

Still, it set the horrible precedent of government trying to determine the winners and losers in the market, so the expectation was set.
