“I have, yet more, dumb questions....
Why is Putin doing this? Is he really planning an act of naked aggression? The Ukraine didn’t leave Russia, did it?
It gained its independence when the Soviet Empire collapsed, yes?”
Not dumb questions at all.
Yes, Ukraine declared its independence after the disintegration of the USSR. But Ukraine is home to some ethnic Russians, especially in the east (the Donbass Region, including Luhansk and Donetsk). Putin is saying that those ethnic Russians want to be part of Russia (that’s very debatable), and that it is Russia’s duty to “rescue them” and “return them to the fold.” It’s actually quite similar to what Hitler did vis-à-vis the Sudetenland in 1938.
“Think of all the Mexicans in California. Where are their loyalties?”
Mexico.
You keep posting this Russian BS. Orange areas on your map are MAJORITY Ukrainian speaking.
Here is a clear map on what % people speak Russian.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Russians_Ukraine_2001.PNG
Sleep tight Brandon....
Also from Wikipedia.
2001 Census
According to official data from the 2001 Ukrainian census, the Russian language is native for 29.6% of Ukraine’s population (about 14.3 million people).[22] Ethnic Russians form 56% of the total Russian-native-language population, while the remainder are people of other ethnic background: 5,545,000 Ukrainians, 172,000 Belarusians, 86,000 Jews, 81,000 Greeks, 62,000 Bulgarians, 46,000 Moldovans, 43,000 Tatars, 43,000 Armenians, 22,000 Poles, 21,000 Germans, 15,000 Crimean Tatars.
Therefore, the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine forms the largest linguistic group in modern Europe with its language being non-official in the state.[citation needed] The Russian-speaking population of Ukraine constitutes the largest Russophone community outside the Russian Federation
It’s time to tell Ukraine to give up on getting Crimea back and to let Donetsk and Luhansk go. And, that it will not be joining NATO.
The irony about this map of Ukraine is that the same thing can be described about Russia.
Muslims now make up over 20% of the population of that nation. Moscow is hovering at about 25% muslim.
Russians do not procreate and for over a hundred years they have treated their children worse than dogs. Give it about 2 decades and they’ll cease to exist. Ezekiel 38 & 39 says so regardless of demographics.
Ukraine declared independence from Russia after the Bolshevik coup in 1917. At one point during the Russian civil war there were 5 separate Ukranian governments including one in the eastern Donetsk region. And the city of Lviv belonged to Poland from 1918 to 1945.
That’s bullcrap. First, the number of Muslims in Russia is 7%.
Second, the only zone where they are predominant over a geographic location is North Caucasus, largely Chechnya and Dagestan. It houses like 2 million people.
I read a book several years ago about the plight of the Jews of Lvov under the Nazi occupation. Brutal stuff.
Putin doesn’t want/need Donbas. Russia can dominate it politically/economically due to geography and corruption. He’d rather have it inside Ukraine where it can manipulated for political gain.
The people that live there will naturally lean east due to family relations and culture but the idea they were clamoring to be part of Russia was always a Putinist fairy tale.
I agree. Russia is full of Muslims. Anybody who won’t admit that basic truth is a gaslighting Putinist. They are the equivalent of Hispanics here in the Us.
Stay ignorant then
Yep.
Putin’s knows demographics are not on his side and neither is time.
I know what I am talking about, you don’t.
No you don’t, but you can keep insisting you do.
Leave the truth talk to us adults.
Just a small point… ethnic Russians are not the only people in Ukraine who speak Russian as their first language.
Where does your figure come from? I guess it is from the population figures of stan states. Claiming that they are all Muslim is akin to claiming that everyone in Iowa is Sioux.
My point exactly. The percentage of ethnic Russians was always slim in Ukraine except for Crimea.
