I once saw a cartoon with a grandfather talking with his young grandson. The grandfather asked his grandson what he wanted to do when he grew up. The grandson responded, “Organized Crime”. The grandfather then asked, “Private or Public sector”.
If you ever wonder why the US Tax Code is so large and complicated it’s because it gives Congress more to sell. When one speaks of Big Oil or King Coal and the amount of money they spread around to politicians, just think of it a “protection” money. Government by nature is a coercive entity and is not really that different from what we think of as “organized crime” in that you either do as they say and pay as they say or they will make you regret not doing so. It’s important to remember that corruption follows money and the biggest pot of money on this planet is Washington DC.

I don’t disagree, and that dynamic becomes more evident by the day.
I do maintain that our supply of oil, gas, and coal has generally been well maintained over the decades and only in a few instances have we had to queue up for gas lines.
That said, I don’t contest that the price we pay might be lower if the market was the only moving force.
