It's a she. London Breed became mayor after Mayor Ed Lee died of a heart attack. She was a member of the Board of Supervisors, and filled out the remainder of Ed Lee's term. Similar to how Dianne Feinstein became mayor, filling out Mayor Moscone's term when he was murdered. These people were not first elected to the Mayor's office by popular vote.
