People in urban areas don’t need the range rural folks do.
I have not gone more than 15 miles from my house for two years because of Covid.
At no point would I have needed a car with more than say 18 miles of range.
Those that need longer range for say a vacation could rent trunk batteries or an ICE car.
Or use a gasoline engine, the best option in all cases.
There are a lot of false myths about electric cars. One, is that range will prevent people from using them. Not true in urban areas, where people might only drive ten miles a day. Two, is that poor people are disadvantaged by not having a nearby charge station; most of these poor are in rental housing like apartments where there is no way to charge an electric vehicle, so they wouldn't buy one in the first place. The poor are simply going to buy an ICE vehicle.
If you're going on a far-away vacation, most likely you're going to fly and then rent a car at your destination. You use Uber, or a taxi, or have a neighbor or relative drive you to the airport while your vehicle stays home.
