I never warmed to Letterman, even when he was on late-late-night TV doing those stupid pet tricks. He always had this air of self-righteous smugness about him. At least Jay Leno came across as warm and friendly. Of course nobody can touch Johnny Carson. Like Rush Limbaugh, he was one-of-a-kind at what he did.

Anyway, it's been a long time since I even watched those late-night shows as you can tell. Not only have I cancelled my cable TV but I can't stay up much past 10PM these days.

Johnny Carson was before my time, however, when Leto and let him and we’re on, I never once watched letterman.

As you said, he had that arrogance about him, that he felt he was better than everyone else in the room. Every time I watched Leno either during late night or on his “Jay Leno‘s garage“ show he comes across as your normal down to earth every day guy who you could just have a normal conversation with on the street. And if you did he wouldn’t be offended that you wanted to say hi to him as he understands that he got where he is because of his loyal fans.
