Kindergartners have been suspended for aiming a finger gun at classmates. I think the parents are horribly irresponsible and I suspect were more interested in reputation than their son.

I don’t doubt it. And had his note been specific, “I’m going to shoot Leslie because she laughed at me”, the school would have grounds to suspend. But “I hear voices, help me, blood everywhere” shows the kid needed help. The school showed the parents the note, asked them to take him home, and get help and the parents refused.

I think this is on the kid and the parents. As for searching the backpack, I believe the school has to have a legitimate reason to search it. If they’d known about the early ‘xmas present’ maybe they would have. But I don’t think they did.
