Dems still have control of the VA State Senate. It was a sweep for Repubs in the 2021 statewide elections. The VA State Senators will be up for election in 2023.
I don’t think the new Republicans will take over until Jan. 15 2022.

To start with, the GOP’s nomination of an electable slate of candidates, Biden’s cratering poll numbers, McAuliffe’s reprehensible stance on CRT, the breakdown of the school systems in NoVA, the disgusting mishandling of the rape of the girl at school in Loudoun County, and Virginia’s penchant for usually electing governors that are not in the same party as the president.
