Most modern SAA clones are either hammer block or transfer bar. The Pietta Model 1873 involved in this incident specifically is a transfer bar gun. It cannot discharge if you slip the hammer but do not depress the trigger.
Pietta also makes a similar gun for another company, the Great Western II, which has a floating firing pin instead of the transfer bar.

Look just above for the details.
“I believe it is a single action revolver. That would mean the hammer would have to be cocked to rotate the round into firing position.”
Does that mean my Ruger Single-Six could be used as a deadly weapon as well?😳
I dont think so on a 1890 SA
Good thing it was not a glock :)
Forensics can determine that? I had no idea.
Um, yeah, most of the industry changed that. Baldwin was not firing an original Colt but a Pietta made replica. The Pietta 1873 has a separate firing pin and a transfer bar. Here’s the parts sheet - the inset in the lower left corner shows the transfer bar system with separate firing pin and hammer. See for yourself.

lotta liability all around
It will be determined that it is a magic gun, the first of its kind, and will be destroyed to keep it from shooting someone else.
I understand.
They just will function test the gun and see what ways it will fire, that’s it. :P
Thanks for the info. I have some familiarity with cowboy guns having worked at SASS End of Trail for 5 years.
If what you state is accurate about the gun he possessed, that doesn’t look good for him.
I had 1 ND in my entire life and it was a bulgarian makarov, slide locked back, I assumed it empty, racked and fired, but pointed it away from anything.
lotta liability on this one
I’ve been watching Yellowstone. WOW a lot of shooting there! And then there is series 24. Guns a blazing.
No reason for Baldwin to kill someone
He not only pulled the trigger but first pointed the gun at a person, then killed them.
Another leftist play actor liar. Seems to be a lot of them around.
No, it doesn’t look good for him, which explains why they’re slow-walking this. Anyone else would have been arrested on the spot.
The stupid part is that Pietta makes a version that can *only* fire a special .380 blank, looks identical and on screen would be indistinguishable. There really was no reason for them to have a live pistol on that set.
The SAA replica industry started changing over to transfer bar or hammer block most notably in 1973 when Ruger came out with their New Models that incorporated transfer bars. There are still a few SAA replicas that don’t have them, but they are fairly uncommon - the supermajority of SAA-types made in the last couple decades are hammer block or transfer bar.
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of people in the SASS world that use older weapons so the newer generations wouldn’t necessarily show up in huge numbers. Movie studios, prop/weaponmasters would generally want newer pieces when available.
One idea is that he pulled the hammer back and had his finger lightly resting on the trigger, so it went off without Baldwin exerting the force it takes to fire a modern weapon, so he didn’t realize he was shooting. But it’s just as possible that he was clowning around with a gun that he⁶e thought was unloaded.. Either way he’s still guilty — and stupid.
A lot of SASS shooters are older.😀
For the rare times I give it a go I use New Model Vaqueros.
