From what I understand it was a single action revolver (western stile) that means you have to pull the hammer back to cock it.
Anyone who have ever fired one knows once cocked its unstable and dropping it or doing anything stupid it will go off. There are legions of negligent discharges associated with people trying to de-cock a single action revolver.
Was it an artificial intelligence controlled gun?

Uh, the weapon he was holding uses centerfire ammunition, not rimfire.
An in all my years, I have never heard or read about spontaneous ignition in ammunition.

Basic gun safety: never point a gun at anyone you don’t intend to shoot. Even the movie industry says that gun exchanges are carefully staged to appear as if antagonists are firing directly at each other while actually angling their aim away from other actors. Baldwin says he was practicing a cross draw while anonyamous crew members say he shot directly at the camera where the cinematographer and director were stationed killing one and wounding the other. I believe Baldwinnis guilty of manslaughter having ignored basic gun safety. But he’ll probably get a lesser charge since live ammo was probably provided by the armourer.
