How long until Apple would remove those restrictions? After all, not doing so would be racist, or something.

Exactly. I was in an Apple store a few years ago and asked about what happens if product is stolen. The guy told me the exact same thing.

Yep, smart phones are smarter than these crooks. You can be sure the IMEI identification is on the barcode and inventory of the store. No one will ever be able to use these again. And as soon as they are powered up they will be located immediately.
